Seen as today is the Goddess's birthday we put together the Top 3 places to visit her in Hong Kong. Recognised as the protector of fishermen and sailors, Mazu - Goddess of the sea, has become a symbol of worship, that has spread throughout China's coastal regions and Southeast Asia. Believed to have roamed the seas, protecting her believers, there are 70 Tin Hau Temples in Hong Kong paying homage to her (Tin Hau is the English translation for the cantonese Mazu).

1. Tin Hau Temple, Repulse Bay

Dedicated to the protectors of fishermen, Tin Hau Temple in Repulse Bay is one of the oldest temples in Hong Kong. The grand statue of the Goddess stands tall at the entrance of the temple welcoming you as you enter. Here you'll find a Chinese style garden that leads down to the beach as well as the Longevity Bridge - which claims to prolong your life by three more days every time you cross it.

2. Tin Hau Temple, Tai O

Like so many places in Hong Kong, Tai O, situated on Lantau Island,  has an interesting story to tell. One of the few remaining fishing villages in Hong Kong, Tai O remains a rare example of the traditional Chinese stilt houses. The Tin Hau Temple here dates back to the Qing Dynasty and is a common place for seafarers praying for a healthy and safe life.

3. Tin Hau Temple, Aberdeen

Often located close to the sea, the Tin Hau Temple in Aberdeen, after undergoing renovations has relocated further inland. Setting it apart from others, this temple is one of the two on Hong Kong Island where the roof is decorated with pottery figurines of females along its ridge. Despite the main deity being Mazu, the temple also houses Choi Pak Sing Kwan (a God of Wealth), Kwun Yam (Goddess of Mercy), Wong Tai Sin and Wah Tor (a God of Medicine).

One of the most important events is Mazu's birthday, otherwise known as the Tin Hau Festival, which falls on the 23rd day of the third lunar month. It just so happens that her birthday is TODAY!
